Okay, I've been sitting here trying to work out a funny joke for Sherlock's violin, and then wondering why I was so pissed off about the whole thing...? And realised all the jokes I was coming up with belonged in a totally different kind of show!
Genre.
Is this the right genre for that joke?
If it had been Police Squad, Naked Gun, Animal House, or anything of that ilk, then the violin joke would have fit and been egged right up to the max, and had plenty of comedy potential. It would have been very easy to spot as a piss-take, in amongst all the other funny.
In Sherlock, it felt out of place - - out of genre - - and so missed the mark. And hit my nark bone instead.
Hmm. ... Maybe I'm getting far too crotchety in my old age?
